Senior Volunteers Help Other Seniors Avoid Being

A Victim of Fraud

Introduction

Scams, fake "investment opportunities," and sophisticated telemarketing frauds are increasing around the country. Older adults and people with savings are the prime target. As Ron Tatro, Director of the Consumer Fraud Project explains, "Anyone at the right time, with the right pitch, by the right person, can be fooled into buying or investing in something they don't need or don't really want." The Consumer Fraud Prevention Project helps people protect themselves from crimes that take money and rob older adults of a secure financial future. If you have questions on a matter, please call us at 1-877-200-4943.

Empowering older adults and their caregivers to identify and resist consumer fraud is one of the main goals of the Consumer Fraud Prevention Project. The Consumer Fraud Prevention Project is a nationwide volunteer program which urges consumers to read up, reach out and become informed about fraud. If you know someone who has been hurt by fraud or is worried about a scam taking advantage of older adults you know, sign up to be a Fraud Fighter for the Consumer Fraud Prevention Project. Volunteers have a great time, enjoy working with others who share their interests and learn valuable information to help themselves and others!

Introduction

ODD $1.00 CREDIT CARD CHARGE ON YOUR CREDIT CARD

Source: Scambusters.org

This could mean thieves are targeting you. Crooks steal your personal information by phishing emails or phone calls and get access to your bank accounts, run up credit card charges or apply for loans in your name. The crooks may check to make sure the numbers work by charging a very small amount on your credit card once or twice. If you ignore the small charge, they may start ripping you off big time. It's a test transaction. Then the crooks spend hundreds of dollars fast.

  • Be wary of using any ATM that appears out-of-the-ordinary
  • Check your accounts often
  • Go online to see recent transactions
  • And don't ignore small odd charges!
