Sticking to Your New Year’s Resolution!

By Sheila Robison, Economic Security Team Member
Over 4,000 years ago, ancient Babylonians started New Year’s resolutions. I wonder if they were successful to keep their promises all through the year! In our current world, only 8% of people actually keep those New Year’s resolutions. Let’s find out how we can be successful throughout the whole year.
It’s always a good move to keep your New Year’s resolutions simple. Goals that take just 10 minutes a day (or less), can lead to big improvements in your health and happiness.

  • Instead of just “exercise more”, try to be more specific and say, “add a daily/weekly walk through the local mall or around the block.”
  • Of course, be realistic, unless you’re planning on joining the U.S. Olympics.
  • Plan a time to make your goals happen. You obviously can’t walk around the block during employment hours or Sunday morning church service. Make it for a time you can spare, even if it’s giving up the evening TV news hour.
  • Make notes, if that helps.
  • Treating yourself is always fun!
  • Ask for support from your spouse and/or friends.

All these things will help keep you on track so whatever your New Year’s resolution is, you can be successful all the year through.
